Hooray for Hobbies!

This week I got a new camera, marking my entry into a new hobby… photography, yay!

As I embark on a  new way to spend my time and money it has pushed me to reflect on my other hobbies. I have always said that I know a little about a lot of different things. I justify that by pointing to the biblical story of the talents.

“And unto one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one; to every man according to his several ability; and straightway took his journey.”

Matthew 25:15

I am always looking for ways to increase my talents. This world is full of so much fun and awesome stuff. I want to do, see and experience it all. A part of that, for me, is collecting “talents” or hobbies as I like to call them.

For some reason it also pushes me to remember back to some of the woman I dated… who effectively had no hobbies. One played sports in high school and in college had no idea what to do with herself, so she watched TV. This gave me almost nothing to share with her or do with her.

Contrasting that to my wife. While yes, we do watch TV, and I greatly enjoy relaxing, snuggling and binging (not to be confused with “binging” the doorbell, yes… I Googled the spelling) with her. Yet, she has several hobbies that she is very passionate about. Not the least of which is being an outstanding mother.

I have one sign, in particular, that my wife is interesting. When we do manage to get a sitter and sneak away from baby girl we have so much to talk about, and its not all about baby girl either. I am pretty sure the reason I found my wife so attractive was because I am so attracted to talking with her. There are so many things in her life that are important to her and I love when she shares them with me. She is also very supportive of my wants, wishes and… hobbies.

Like… bread making: She eats more of my loaves than I do, and suggests buying more loaf pans (or baby sized pans) to expand my bread offerings.

Or… guitar: She picked out a wonderful acoustic guitar as a graduation present for me

And who could forget… SCUBA: Not only did she brave the terrifying, for her, certification process. But, she also makes sure I know she is behind me embarking on future diving missions. She is prompt to note that she will not be making these journeys with me though.

Hooray for hobbies and those who support ours!
